As we reported earlier this week, LeBron James has agreed to a lifetime contract with Nike, keeping King James in the Swoosh not just for the remainder of his career, but potentially setting him up for a Jordan Brand-like enterprise long after his playing days are done. Following statements from Nike and from his manager, Maverick Carter, today we finally hear from the man himself.
LeBron fires up the camera and heads to the most fitting place imaginable for such an announcement: his sneaker closet. On the topic of Nike blessing him with his own signature shoe over a decade ago, LBJ describes his thought process:
You have your own signature kick. For a kid growing up, seeing kids walking around with Jordans and Barkleys and Pennies and Pippens. I thought the greatest thing — Griffeys! — I thought that was the greatest thing ever. And I was that kid too.
After which, he addresses what it means to get this kind of contract, this level of commitment and support from Nike:
It doesn’t make sense to me right now. I haven’t got a grip on it, I haven’t got a grasp on it, on what just happened today with this announcemnt. But one thing I can say that I am truly, truly honored and this is a true humble moment for myself and my family and my fans and my friends. And I will continue to inspire. This is just the beginning.
