The latest installment in the Nike Inner Strength documentary series has launched, this one centered on Blake Leeper, and it may just change the way you think about training.
You see, Leeper was born with a congenital birth defect; he was born without legs. By the time he was nine months old, he was wearing the prosthetics that would be a part of him for the rest of his life, and battling the prognoses of doctors who expected him to never walk, never run. Rather than succumb to the weight of expectation, Blake used his unique situation as inspiration. “Most people think that would be a tragedy being born without legs, that would be terrible,” he says, “but actually that’s been my strength.”
Now, at 25, Blake is a Paralympic Games medalist and the second double-amputee to ever break the 11-second barrier in the 100-meter dash. In the new Inner Strength episode, Nike documents Blake as he undertakes his workout regimen and discusses his motivation, and how he’s turned a disability into a driving force.
