The Colerain High School football team took the field Thursday, November 7, to prepare for the following Saturday’s playoff tilt with Hilliard Darby, but it was what happened at the close of practice that may be more memorable than any first-round game.
As Colerain finished up its playoff prep, the team was greeted by a surprising, unusual site: a black helicopter bearing the unmistakable Nike Swoosh that, after moments of descent, actually landed on the field.
In the chopper? Ambassadors of Nike, one of Colerain’s corporate sponsors, who were delivering personalized cold-weather gear for the football team.
“Nike called us earlier in the week and set all this up,” said Colerain athletic director Dan Bolden. “It’s one of the great things Nike has done with us. It’s a great thing for high school football. Our kids deserved this.”
Who’s to say if the surprise inspired the team — they were given no advance notice — but it certainly didn’t hurt. Colerain went on to topple Hilliard Darby 28-7.
